NIGHTFLY BROADCAST #14 - RE-ISSUES & COMPILATIONS OF THE YEAR 2020

Posted on December 16 2020

Carrying on with the Best of 2020 theme, here are my favourite compilations and re-issues from this year. There have been some outstanding box sets releases this year including Prince – Sign ‘O’ The Times, Richard & Linda Thompson – Hard Luck Stories, Thin Lizzy – Rock Legends just to name three but the list here are the records/CD’s I played and returned to most often.

NIGHTFLY RECORDS COMPILATIONS & RE-ISSUES OF THE YEAR 2020

10. Colin Curtis Presents Jazz Dance Fusion Volume 2 (Z Records)
Masterful jazz compilation from the super selector Colin Curtis fusing jazz, funk & soul for sophisticated dance floors. Be prepared to be taken on a global tour in 13 tracks.

9. Jim Spencer & Angie Jarer - Wrap Myself Up In Your Love (Numero)
A re-issue 7 inch of this glorious 1979 ‘yacht rock’ classic, blue eyed music for the soul.

8. CPR – CPR (BMG)
Underrated David Crosby album from 1998 gets a re-issue on CD, his beautiful voice rides on gentle jazz chords and melting harmony, a soundtrack for Summer evenings.

7. Daisy Glow – Give It All (RE:WARM)
Lovely lost San Fran deep house from 1992 sounding as relevant today as then, brought to us by the label of the year RE:WARM.

6. V/A - Bob Stanley Presents 76 In the Shade (Ace)
Another excellent compilation from Bob Stanley, he is the master of these. The theme is the long hot summer of 1976 and pop heaven ensues.

5. The Deep – Silver Surfer (Violent Drum Recordings)
A re-issue for this prog house classic from 1993 using samples from David Sylvian over pulsing pads and skippy beats, deep and delicious. Copies flew out of here at Nightfly.

4. Joris Voorn – Rotterdam #43 (Global Underground)
Mix album of the year. The mix album is a rare beast these days but Joris Voorn justifies its existence with a seamless and beautifully put together selection/collage of nearly 120 tracks! Deep and atmospheric, this propels itself forward on mood and melody. Ace.

3. V/A – Saint Etienne Presents Songs for the Coffee Room (Ace)
More compilation action from Bob Stanley, this time joined by his St Etienne chums and travelling to LA for an hour or so of cool soul and R&B. The selection is top notch as you would expect, buy on site. Ace Records, we need a vinyl release of this please.

2. UFO – Strangers In The Night (Chrysalis Records)
Quite simply one of, if not the best rock live album of all time pushing ‘Live & Dangerous’ ‘Cheap trick At Budokan’ ‘Kiss Alive’ etc into 2nd place, re-mastered to make it sing and the Deluxe version had, in full, all the 6 concerts that the album was drawn from.

1. Johann Johannsson – Retrospective II (Deutsche Grammophon)
8 x CD retrospective of the late great Johann Johannsson covering his soundtracks for ‘The Theory of Everything’ ‘Sicario’, ‘Arrival’ and ‘The Mercy’ as well as the sublime ‘Orphee’ and ‘Englaborn’ albums. This is essential for lovers of neo classical and electronic soundscapes, a genius of his field.

A varied selection of great music, I have included a playlist below for your discovery.

Stay safe

David – Nightfly Records
