Here are the top ten albums that made us happy at Nightfly Records in 2024.
Nightfly Records – Albums Of The Year - 2024
10. Kaito– Collection (Infine Records)
An ambient masterclass from Japanese artist Hiroshi Watanabe. From dense claustrophia to delicate pastoral to beat formed electronica. Subtle and sensitive for those contemplative moments.
9. Robag Wruhme - T.O.R. LP 001 (Tulpa Ovi Records)
First LP from Robag’s own label showcasing the 12” releases. A masterclass in restrained elegance. Minimalist grooves unfurl with cinematic poise, each track a whispery blend of ambient textures and understated beats. It’s techno as introspective poetry, laced with melancholy and hope as only Robag can.
8. Nala Sinephro – Endlessness (Warp records)
Belgian experimental jazz musician Nala Sinephro plays spiritual jazz that glides from the meditative to the exploratory. Adventurous, enlightening and at times challenging but ultimately a deeply rewarding listening experience.
7. Alex Albrecht pres. Melquiades – Allambie (Analogue Attic)
A sonic reverie that whispers through a jazz-inflected haze. With pastoral warmth and lilting percussion, it recalls ECM’s serene landscapes. The track floats between ambient and cinematic, conjuring a sunlit melancholy. It's a bittersweet hymn for dreamers, capturing fleeting beauty with understated brilliance.
6. Baby Rose & BADBADNOTGOOD - Slow Burn (Secretly Canadian)
Soulful smoulder, steeped in late-night jazz and velvet-draped intimacy. Rose’s husky vocal aches with longing, gliding over BADBADNOTGOOD’s lush, restrained groove. It's a torch song for the modern age, drenched in noirish atmosphere and smoky, heartbreak-drenched elegance.
5. Ocoeur – Breath (n5MD)
Ocoeur's Breath is a luminous exploration of texture and tone, weaving ambient electronics into an intricate sonic tapestry. Ethereal synths swell and recede like distant tides, evoking both solace and unease. It's a deeply cinematic piece, shimmering with quiet introspection.
4. NxWorries (Knxwledge & Anderson Paak) – Why Lawd? (Stones Throw Records)
Anderson Paak’s plaintive, honeyed vocal delivery wades through Knxwledge’s dusty, crackling beats, blending old-school warmth with existential weight. A bittersweet meditation on resilience, injustice, and the fragile beauty of hope.
3. Svaneborg Kardyb– Superkilen (Gondwana Records)
A radiant fusion of Scandinavian minimalism and jazz-infused curiosity from Danish pair Nikolaj Svaneborg and Jonas Kardyb. Warm keys ripple over deft, percussive textures taking you on a journey through light and shadow, capturing the essence of urban serenity with a pastoral heart and is achingly beautiful.
2. Bonny Light Horseman – Keep Me On Your Mind/See You Free (Jagjaguwar)
Modern folk alchemy from Anais Mitchell, Eric D. Johnson and Josh Kaufman. Inspired and partially recorded in a County Cork coastal pub it is anchored by achingly tender harmonies, the tracks weaving melancholy with hope. Pastoral warmth meets timeless longing, conjuring a sound both ancient and fresh.
Vegyn – The Road To Hell Is Paved With Good Intentions (PLZ Make It Ruins)
London based producer Joe Thornalley takes us on a kaleidoscopic odyssey through fractured beats and ghostly textures. Flickering between chaos and calm, it channels a postmodern unease with hypnotic precision. This is avant-garde electronica that feels both cerebral and visceral, it enchanted and thrilled all year - transcendent.
